“The human mind is the most efficient organizational system on the planet, could be in the universe for all we know.“ ~Jason Howard (Senior Technical Researcher, Intel Labs)
Back some time ago, I copy/pasted a couple pictures off the internet for a document I was creating for a high school class. Soon after doing so, a window popped up with a foreboding message that spelled the doom of my computer: “Complete System Failure.”
As I read that ominous message and realized what just happened, my heart sank. My computer had died a premature death.
I started wondering how many other computers are filled with active viruses and dormant Trojans, slowing functions, causing quirky malfunctions and system failures.
It got me thinking.
Protecting More than Machines
If we protect our computer systems with spam filters and virus protection and firewalls, why do we so quickly download such awful garbage into the most important memory storage system we will ever own without so much as a second thought?
Why do we let filth creep into our minds, clogging our souls, slowing our upload time, cluttering our memories, corrupting our thoughts, allowing the risk of complete moral system failure as images and words seep into the hardware of our hearts, minds and lives?
Why do we so indiscriminately clutter our brains with filth and trash? Why do we let music and movies that promote ugliness and indecency and disrespect get access to that organic computer system we should be protecting most actively, most carefully and most faithfully?
Just asking.

I agree Ken! I used to listen to a lot of rock and roll music but several years ago it hit my how negative a lot of the lyrics were. And I realized what effect the music was having on my own thoughts. The same with violent movies. I’m a lot happier now that I’m more aware of what external stimulation I allow in my life.

Good for you, Ed. My high school students are always amazed when I tell them I don’t watch “R” rated movies because I don’t want as my entertainment the garbage that makes them inappropriate for younger audiences. We have to ask ourselves what’s most important: a particular movie that everyone is watching or the mind that will absorb it and all its images and words and storyline?
Thanks for sharing, my friend.
Definitely Ken. I’m always amazed at how many artists defend their creation by saying they’re just reflecting their reality.
What about using your art or music or creativity to create a better reality, both for yourself and others?
I remember when art was used to elevate, not merely reflect. I’m with you 100%, Ed!
You just made me feel fear Ken. I would be pretty devastated if that happened to me, but luckily my most important things on my computer are backed up, but still that would suck.
I agree that we should watch what we put into our minds. I stopped hanging around a lot of negative people and that changed things greatly. A huge thing for me too was stopping the porn habit. That has had tremendous benefits and I would recommend it to everyone.
